Mineral of the Year
Since 2014, IMA has selected the most inspiring and exciting new minerals discovered during the year as “Mineral of the Year” to promote mineral sciences. The selection is made by a vote of the members of the Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification (CNMNC), taking into account the following aspects.
- aesthetics (nice crystals, well-developed morphology)
- unprecedented crystal structure
- unusual combination of chemical elements
- relevance in mineralogical systematics and in Earth sciences overall
